Change your address with the IRS — fill out Form 8822 online

There’s no e-file for Form 8822: the IRS requires it on paper, signed and mailed to a specific office. This free tool fills the official form in with you and shows you exactly where to send it — and, if you’d rather skip the errand, we generate, print, and mail it for you.

Filling it in and downloading it is always free. Letting us mail it is the only optional paid step.

Fills in right in your browser · we never store your SSN · no account needed. Why it’s secure

Tax Address Change is a private service — not the IRS and not affiliated with any government agency. Form 8822 is always free to file yourself. Full disclaimer.

Step 1 of 6 — About you

Your actual Form 8822, filling in as you type

Free to fill out and download — print and mail it yourself, or we mail it from $9.99.

Your Social Security number is never stored — it goes straight onto the printed form and into the envelope, nowhere else. How that works

Free: get your form ready in about a minute

  1. Answer a few plain-English questions. Your Form 8822 fills in live as you type — no decoding the IRS instructions, no blank PDF to wrestle with.
  2. Sign on your screen and download your finished form — free. Then we show you the exact IRS address for your old state, so you know precisely where to mail it.
  3. Print it and drop it in the mail. That’s the whole job. Or skip the errand and let us mail it for you — your choice.

Refunds chase your address

Paper refund checks and IRS letters go to the address on file — and Treasury checks generally aren’t forwarded by USPS. Forwarding doesn’t update the IRS

Notices count, seen or not

An IRS notice is legally effective at your last known address — even sitting unread in an old mailbox. Miss a balance-due notice (CP14) and penalties grow; miss a 90-day Notice of Deficiency and you can lose the right to challenge the bill in Tax Court.

The IRS won’t confirm it

It takes 4–6 weeks and sends individuals no confirmation. If you want proof, a Certified Mail tracking record is the only receipt you’ll ever have. irs.gov: Topic 157

Why it’s secure

It fills in on your device

Your answers — and your Social Security number — stay in your browser while you work. They never touch our servers as you fill the form in.

Nothing is saved as you fill it in

There’s no account, and nothing you type is written to our servers while you work. Refresh the page and your SSN and signature are gone — that’s by design, not by accident.

Mailed by PostGrid — built for sensitive data

Only if you choose mailing does your finished form leave your browser — sent once, over an encrypted connection, to PostGrid, the print-and-mail service we use. Per its published documentation PostGrid is SOC 2 Type II audited and HIPAA-compliant, encrypts data in transit, and purges files automatically — and we keep no copy. See the full data path

Optional: skip the errand — we’ll mail it for you

The form is always free to fill out and download. If you’d rather not print, address, and mail it yourself, we’ll handle that last part:

One time — no account, no subscription. Full refund any time before your letter prints, and if the IRS ever rejects a form we mailed, we re-mail it free or refund you in full. Questions? support@taxaddresschange.com (a human answers within one business day). More on how mailing works and security.

Quick answers

Why do I need to tell the IRS I moved?

Until the IRS updates its records, refund checks and notices keep going to your old address — and an IRS notice counts as delivered to your “last known address” whether you ever see it or not. USPS forwarding does not update the IRS, and Treasury checks generally are not forwarded.

Is there an online way to change my address with the IRS?

No. For Form 8822 there is no e-file or online submission — the IRS requires it on paper, signed and mailed to a specific office. This is a free tool that fills the official form in with you and shows you exactly where to mail it.

Do I have to pay anything?

No. Filling in and downloading your Form 8822 is free — print it and mail it yourself. The only optional paid step is letting us do the mailing for you: $9.99, or $14.99 with USPS Certified Mail tracking. One time, no account, no subscription.

Are you the IRS?

No — this tool was not made by the IRS and we are not affiliated with any government agency. It simply helps you fill out and file the IRS’s own official Form 8822, which you can always get free from the IRS.

What happens to my Social Security number?

While you fill the form in, it stays in your browser — it never touches our servers, and refreshing the page clears it. Your SSN only ever goes one place: onto your printed Form 8822, sealed in the envelope to the IRS. If you choose paid mailing, your finished PDF travels once — straight to our print partner to be printed and put in that envelope — and is never stored, by us or anyone else.

How long until the IRS processes it?

The IRS says about 4–6 weeks after it receives the form, and it sends individuals no confirmation. That is why a Certified Mail tracking record can be reassuring.

Was my last return joint — does my spouse sign too?

Yes, joint returns need both signatures (unless you are establishing a separate residence and check that box — the wizard handles this rule for you).
